Jazz fans are missing something if they haven’t listened to the Cookie Jones Trio between 20:30 and 23:00 on the last Thursday of every month at
“The Silk Road” in Littlehampton.  The trio consists of:

Cookie Jones is one of the most sought-after drummers on the British musical scene.  His delicate touch and sensitive style provide the perfect
backing for his fellow musicians.  He is able to produce unexpected sounds from his drum kit.  For example, if you were not watching you would
think that he was playing the bongos.  His occasional solo spots always maintain a relationship with the original tune and its rhythm, which is
more than can be said of many other drummers.

Adrian Kendon is one of Britain’s most respected bass players.  He was director of the hugely successful Jazz Studies Department at Chichester
College between 1996 and 2009 and many will remember the days when he used to bring his students to perform at “The Hare & Hounds” at the
end of the academic year.  Nowadays he continues to play his bass with characteristic aplomb to provide a firm “centre of gravity” for whichever
musicians he happens to be playing with.

Ray d’Inverno, who, apart from being a remarkable jazz musician, happens also to be Emeritus Professor in General Relativity at the University of
Southampton, plays keyboard in a most tasteful style.  Perhaps his mathematical background accounts for his skillful improvisations and careful
choice of delicate chords to provide an embellishing background to the bassist’s solos.  His subtle virtuosity rewards the attentive listener.

Clearly, these three musicians come together because they really enjoy it, and that is obvious from the way they play together with great
understanding and respect for each other.  Why else would Ray travel over from his home in mid-Dorset for this monthly get together?

On 28 April the trio rewarded their audience with a rich variety of numbers ranging from the Miles Davis classic “So What” to the tasteful “When the
Sun comes up” by Harold Arlen and “Swinging on a Star” by Jimmy van Heusen.  The trio always include some Latin numbers, which this time
included a super rendition of the popular Mexican song “Bésame Mucho”.
It is not unknown for other musicians to guest with the trio and on this occasion tenor saxophonist Bruce McKavin was in the audience and joined
in with “Desafinado”, “Stella by Starlight” and to conclude the evening Charlie Parker’s “Now’s the Time”.
It’s well worth the journey over to Littlehampton.  The award-winning Silk Road Restaurant predominantly serves excellent Turkish food with a two-
course set menu offering ample scope of choice at only £8.95 per person.  There is parking in the street outside the restaurant and if the “drink-
drive dilemma” is an issue Littlehampton Station is only 6 minutes’ walk away.  The last train to Worthing and Brighton departs at 23:39 and the off-
peak day return rail fare won’t break the bank.

Dear Silkroadies, friends, family and people I haven't seen for ages,

An excerpt from the Observer & Gazette Business Award Ceremony Brochure -
THE READERS' CHOICE AWARD

'Businesses didn’t need to impress a panel of judges, they needed to have the backing of the people who really matter – the public.  Readers
were asked to vote for the businesses they felt deserved their support. The one which amassed the most votes will tonight win the
Readers' Choice award so that means the business which offers the best value for money, the best customer experience and the best after
sales service will win the award.

After all if a business offers only two out of these three, they won't be receiving votes as there are no more discerning judges than those
who hand over their hard earned cash. As we all know impressing a panel of business judges is one thing – impressing customers is
something else altogether and that why winning the Readers Choice award will be really worth shouting about.'  March, 2011.

Well, Silkroadies - who do you think won that highly prestigious award ........
  The Silk Road Restaurant!!!!

I was so blown away, when I went up to receive the award from Fred Dineage I couldn't speak.  In fact, I totally lost it and in typical-Teresa-
fashion fell apart in front of around 300 people!  Some women look fabulous when they cry - but not me, oh no.  The lips fold upwards, the
skin goes blotchy, hair becomes limp and the eyes go red and piggy-shaped - in fact I readily admit to being an ugly crier - and this picture is
actually before all that happened!  So just imagine how I must have looked by the time I stepped down off the stage!

I am still blown away and Sebastian, Megan, Adem, Katie, Steph and the rest of the SRR family are quite beside themselves.  We did it folks.
We didn't win Restaurant of the Year - that Award was won by Cassons in Chichester and having seen their website, I can quite understand
why and how they managed to impress the judges - a really wonderful and inspirational menu and a deserving winner.

However, we won the people's award - the hearts of the people we want to win.  I leave you with my simple thanks for all your votes and the
funny thing is I know of an awful lot of people who couldn't find the link on the website, didn't read my emails in time or just forgot.  So, for
the Observer and Gazette to be inundated with emails, texts, reply forms & letters means there must be even more people out there who
love the Silk Road than we ever realised!

I send you all a virtual hug, with my love,
Teresa
Hi there Silkroadies,

We have had so many amazing themes for New Year's Eve over the years, it's quite hard to remember them all
- Titanic, St. Trinian's, Arabian Nights, Breakfast at Tiffany's - but I think the one we have just had, which was
Flower Power, will probably go down as the best yet (if that's possible).

There were a number of groups who really stood out and I just HAVE to thank everyone for making such an
effort in these somewhat economically dreary times.  These are a few pics sent to me already and include the
incredible Williams', Len & Julie's group, Barry and Diane and of course Sharon and Stuart.

Needless to say, we were fully booked and both Serita and Andy were here providing the ultimate in party
entertainment.  I think I lost around two hours out of my life as between midnight and 2 O'clock in the morning,
I cannot remember a thing!  All I know is that we had an absolute Blast of a night during which, I am reliably
informed, I spent quite a bit of time on the dance floor or spread-eagled across Richard's lap!  (or was it
Barry's or Adrian's or Len's!!)  However, I do remember delving into a number of unsuspecting gentlemen's
pockets in search of fivers to wrap around our gorgeous belly dancer's bra straps!  Serita is far too ladylike to
offer such a hint, so it was down to me to make sure that our regulars remembered to show their annual
gesture of appreciation.  (And I didn't mind helping out!)

Tomorrow (Wedesday 4th Jan) we are hoping to get back on track with our monthly Quiz night as usual - but it
will depend on bookings.  If any of you feel like I do, nothing would happen until the middle of February but
fortunately I have a great team (as you all know) who are raring to go!!!  This Saturday, however, we do have a
private birthday party for fifty people so the restaurant will not be open on Saturday night only - the rest of the
week will be business as usual.

Thank you again to all my friends and customers for your support and for creating one of the best nights I can
remember for a long while and thanks for all your emails.  This one from Barry and Diane says it all:

Hi Teresa & Gang,

Thank you for such a wonderful evening last night. The food, plus the hospitality from you and your loyal hard working helpers and Serita's
terrific dancing were just 'Simply the Best'.  Special mention should go to DJ Andy for a great selection of music, we remembered most of
the words, however as the evening progressed, and the slurping began to take it's toll we continued singing, supplementing any old words
that appeared to rhyme.

Full marks go to all the people for making such an effort to dress up, everyone is so friendly. Di and myself made new friends with the two
couples of Lithuanian origin. They were so nice, we have photos of them as well as many others.

I think you have something really special in Silk Road, you must have because last night was, I think, the first time in that I have shaken a leg,
or jigged about in public for at least 100 years. I still think I was tricked into dancing with Serita's finger of persuasion. We do hope to see
you again one evening in the not too distant future. Keep up the great work.

And once we wish you and everyone at Silk Road a Very Happy New Year.

Love from
Barry & Di
